Copy vs. Content

What’s the difference between copy and content?

You’ve probably heard the words “content” and “copy” thrown around interchangeably in the online business world. But the two words don’t mean the same thing.

Content is information communicated through media. This can include writing, but also spans audio, video, and visual graphics.

Examples of content:

  • Blogs

  • eBooks

  • Whitepapers

  • YouTube videos

  • Podcasts

  • Infographics

  • Social media posts

  • Photography

Copy is written content designed to sell.

Examples of copy:

  • Website pages

  • Facebook ads

  • Email marketing

  • Sales brochures

  • Case studies

When looking to hire someone to write for your business, there are two kinds of professionals you can hire: content writers and copywriters. They are both writers who can represent your brand, but their work has different intended outcomes. If you want to persuade someone to buy something from you, then you want them to write copy, and therefore you want to hire a copywriter. If you want someone to learn something from you, or view you as an authority on a topic, you want to hire a content writer.

Many writers can write both copy and content. Writers like the Bigmouth Copy team. But before hiring someone to write for your wedding business, ask them about their qualifications and look at examples of past content writing and copywriting.
